Who we are

Offcut is made by Novaevum Pty Ltd (ABN 52 701 855 727), Suite 2 Level 1, 9-11 Grosvenor Street, Neutral Bay NSW 2089, Australia. Write to hello@offcut.video about anything on this page.

What Offcut sends, and when

Offcut makes no network connections other than the ones listed here. Each one says exactly what it carries.

Checking for updates

Each time you open Offcut it asks our update server whether a newer version exists. That request carries the app version and your macOS version, as any web request does, and nothing else: Offcut does not send a profile of your Mac. Our server keeps ordinary access logs, which include the address your Mac connected from. An update is never installed without asking you first, and you can turn automatic checks off in Settings.

Buying and activating a licence

When you buy Offcut, the purchase happens in a checkout run by Paddle, shown on our buy page. Paddle act as the merchant of record (Paddle.com Market Ltd in the United Kingdom for most of the world; buyers in the United States and Canada deal with Paddle's companies there). Paddle collects what it needs to take payment and meet tax obligations: your name, email address, payment details and billing country. We never see your card details. Paddle tells us your email address and a transaction reference, and we use those to email you your licence key and to honour refunds.

When you enter your key, Offcut sends our licence server three things: the key itself; a one-way code made from your Mac's hardware identifier, which never leaves your Mac and cannot be worked back from the code; and your Mac's name as shown in System Settings. The name is there so that, if all three of your Macs are in use, you can see which one to sign out. Many people's Mac names include their own name, so we treat it as personal information.

Our licence server keeps a record of each licence (your email address, the key, how many Macs it covers, when it was issued, and Paddle's transaction reference) and of each Mac it is active on (the one-way code, the Mac's name, and when it was activated and last seen). When you deactivate a Mac from Settings, that Mac's record is marked inactive. Offcut checks in with the licence server each time you open it, no more than once an hour unless you ask it to, and only when you are online, sending the same three things as when you activate. Scanning and browsing never stop, whatever the server says and whether or not it can be reached; until your licence settles (see the terms), deleting pauses if Offcut has not reached the server for ten days. Offcut keeps a record of its last successful check-in on your Mac, signed by our server so Offcut can tell if it has been changed: your licence ID, the one-way code for your Mac, the time, and whether your licence has settled. It stays on your Mac, and Offcut sends it nowhere. Your Mac's internet address is used only to limit abuse of the server and is not stored.

We keep your licence record for as long as your licence is valid, and for as long as Australian tax law requires us to keep sales records.

Crash reports

If Offcut crashes, it sends us a report so we can fix the cause. The report contains the technical trace of the crash and your Mac's model. Before it leaves your Mac, anything in it that looks like a file path, a library name or a clip name is replaced with the word "path". It contains no account details and no record of what you were doing. Reports are processed by Sentry (Functional Software, Inc., United States) and kept for 90 days. Like any web request, sending one shows Sentry the address your Mac connected from; the report itself does not include it. You can turn crash reports off in Settings.

Anonymous usage statistics

Off unless you turn them on. Offcut asks once on the welcome screen, and the switch is in Settings. When on, Offcut sends small anonymous events: the app and macOS version; how many libraries and clips a scan covered, as a size band rather than a number; which sections you opened; how much space a clean-up or a Range Trim reclaimed; and why a file was kept whole. It cannot send a file name, a path, a library name or anything you typed: the format has no room for them.

Each event carries a random identifier created on your Mac that is not connected to your licence or your email address. Events are dated by day, not by time. Your internet address is not stored. We keep individual events for 90 days and totals indefinitely. Turning statistics off deletes the identifier and anything waiting to be sent.

Support reports

If you send a support report from inside Offcut, we receive: your email address, so we can reply; your message; the app and macOS version, your Mac's model and your language setting; a snapshot of what Offcut was showing, as counts and totals only (how many libraries, how many clips, how much space), never a file name, a path or a library name; and your licence key, if you have one, which identifies your purchase but does not contain your email address in readable form.

If you record your screen for the report, we also receive that recording and still frames taken from it. A recording shows whatever was in Offcut's window at the time, including the names of your libraries and clips, so record only what you are happy for us to see.

Ninety days after your case is closed we remove your email address and your licence key from it. We keep the rest, meaning your message, the recording if you made one, and the technical details, to improve Offcut, including to build and check the tools we use to help customers. Ask at any time and we will delete your whole case.

Nothing else

There is no advertising, no profiling and no third-party analytics in Offcut. We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for marketing. We may email you about Offcut updates and new products; every such email has an unsubscribe link, and we email you about nothing else.

What stays on your Mac

Offcut keeps a few things on your Mac that never leave it unless you send them: a log of everything it has moved to the Bin or to a Quarantine folder, with the original locations, so it can be restored; a manifest inside each Quarantine folder for the same reason; your licence key and the email address you bought with; and any support report you have drafted. They live in your Library folder under Application Support, and you can delete them at any time.

This website

offcut.video sets no cookies of its own and runs no analytics. It remembers whether you chose the light or dark appearance, in your own browser and nowhere else. No page loads anything from a third party except the buy page, which loads Paddle's checkout from Paddle so that you can pay. Once that page is open, Paddle's checkout may set its own cookies and collect technical information about your browser, which Paddle handles under its own privacy notice. The site is hosted by Cloudflare, Inc. (United States), which keeps ordinary request logs for security and delivery and may set a short-lived cookie to protect the site from automated abuse.

Where your information goes

Some of the services we use are outside Australia: Paddle in the United Kingdom, or in the United States or Canada if you buy from there, for purchases; Cloudflare in the United States, which hosts this website and runs our update, licence and support systems; and Sentry in the United States, for crash reports. Each holds only what this page describes.

How we keep it

Everything we hold ourselves is stored on Cloudflare's systems, travels only over encrypted connections, and is reachable only by the people who run Offcut. Paddle and Sentry hold what their sections describe, under their own security.

Your choices and rights

You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it; we will, except for the sales records the law requires us to keep. Write to hello@offcut.video and we will answer within 30 days. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles. If you have a complaint, tell us and we will work through it with you.

If the business changes hands

If Novaevum Pty Ltd sells Offcut or the business, your licence record and the information described on this page may transfer to the new owner. We will require them to handle it under this policy, or one that protects you at least as well, and we will tell you when it happens.

Children

Offcut is not directed at children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

Changes to this policy

When this page changes, the version and date at the top change with it, and the log at the foot says what changed. A change that affects the app is also noted in the app's release notes. Our terms and refund policy are separate pages.
